The purpose of an Access Audit is not to try to persuade you to spend
large amounts of money on alterations - or to instil fear or anxiety.
It is not meant to give an impression of disabled people as demanding, aggressive individuals, but as normal consumers who want to feel comfortable, without loss of control.
The Audit is an assessment which will illustrate the optimum conditions for a business premises to be accessible to all.
I will identify the areas of your building most in need of attention. I will make recommendations that may only require a few simple alterations – and some of these will cost no more than a small amount of effort or a few pounds. The more costly – or difficult - recommendations may be directly related to your budget allowance and you may wish to view these with a progressive approach towards full compliance for the future or when renovation is next carried out on your premises.
An audit is not just about compliance with the law and evasion of possible litigation.
It is also about:
• increasing the number of customers who can use your service – and feel relaxed whilst on your business premises
• giving a higher social profile for your company.
Meeting the requirements of the Act is, however, important. The Disability
Rights Commission regularly receive complaints regarding access to services
and assist those wishing to begin legal proceedings against a company.
The DRC recommend, and recognise, an Audit as a demonstration of compliance
with the DDA. It can be used in a Court to defend a legal action against
the company in question.
Make your customers feel at ease, not awkward or embarrassed. Welcome them – and they will return, bringing friends and family - and give back more.
I can give an informed - and unbiased – judgement of access needs for your business.
I will be sensitive to your budget restrictions whilst understanding the frustration of those wishing to use your service who find barriers that prevent this.
Contact me now – and take the first step towards feeling comfortable with the implications of the DDA. When booking a date for your Access Audit, you will be taking the second crucial step – the possibility of seeing your customer base expand.
