Terms or phrases - (A) Glossary Description
ADSL ADSL - Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. The phone company's answer to cable modems and in the future even an alternative to ISDN. An ADSL circuit connects two specific locations (similar to a leased line) but it is much faster than a regular phone connection. In theory ADSL allows download speeds of up to 9 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 640 Kbps.
 
ANSI American National Standards Institute (ANSI) - An independent non-profit organization that creates and publishes U.S. national standards taking input from all sectors of the technical community and the public at large. ANSI also works in collaboration with other standards organizations such as ISO (the International Standards Organization) and IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).
 
Applet Small (Java) program embedded in an HTML page. When you access that Web page, the browser downloads the applet and runs it on your computer. For security reasons applets cannot read or write data onto your computer. The applet can only be executed if your browser supports Java.
 
Archive To copy data onto a different disk or tape for backup or data retention purposes. Archived files are normally compressed to maximize storage media, and such compression programs may be called "archiver programs" or "archiving programs."
 
ASCII ASCII - American Standard Code for Information Interchange. World-wide standard for the code numbers assigned to each key on the keyboard. ASCII text does not include formatting and therefore can be exchanged and read by most computer systems.
 
ASF ASF - Advance Streaming Format, which is the file format for Windows Media Player. Many video clips found on a wide range of commercial websites are encoded to this format.
 
ASP Active Server Pages (ASP) is a server side scripting language that was developed by Microsoft to delilver dynamic data retrieved from a database and generated on the fly to any web page that utilises the ASP scripts. ASP is primarily designed for Microsoft's IIS (Internet Information Server)
 
Authoring Software This term refers to software that enables the creation of multimedia or hypertext documents and presentations.
 
AVI AVI - Audio Video Interleave : (Digital) video file format created by Microsoft (Video for Windows). An .avi file contains picture and sound elements stored in alternate (interleaved) chunks.
