Indeed ! As I’m used to never find what I’m looking for I didn’t even checked the links given :/
But hopefully I have seen quite quickly where the problem was

Ahah yes A LOT of surprises with magento, and there’s still mysterious things happening despite years.
I haven’t completely solved my issue but I guess I’ll change the part where it returns a 503 by simply exiting the controller properly

Hi Anthony,

Yep you’re right, sometimes they just come by complete surprise (annoyingly)!! I’ve wasted so much time having ‘fun’ with errors that occur by surprise without any upgrades or changes to the Magento store.

I’m glad the post helped in some way with 503’s and thanks for your comment and the tip. I have yet to try multiple Magento stores sharing paypal accounts or dared to touch ebay integration (YET).

How did you solve your issue?

As I hadn’t made a recent update I didn’t tried to replace files as you did but the 503 error you talked about helped me.
In fact my client has an ebay store, so clients pay on the same paypal account than the magento one… you see the problem coming. The payment made via ebay launched an ipn read by magento, but magento didn’t found the order (as it’s an ebay one) and returned a 503 error. Only on error is not a problem for paypal but after several error paypal decided to completely deactivate ipn messages. Not nice 😀

So be aware, if you have other stores using the same paypal account, it may be the source of the problem

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for your kind words. I tried to add a little spice.

No problem, I’m always happy to link to valuable posts, after all it was my first foray in the world of PayPal IPN issues and I had a lot to learn. It’s one of those things where there is so much information and it takes ages to first find and then try each solution, so I thought I would share my experience.

I wish I had tried overwriting the PayPal files first, it would have saved me 10+ hours! and several grey hairs 🙂

Yeah, I have never had an painless Magento upgrade, apart what from i thought this one was (aside from paypal issues).

Thanks for your valuable insight and comments!

Piers

Good write-up and thanks for linking to my blog post at Design Haven on the subject.

The 503 error that Paypal claim, which there is no trace of in Magento, is almost always due to a mismatch of data (of course, if Magento is the only sales channel being used with Paypal, this is probably unlikely). If there are any missing or corrupt files in the code pool folder for Paypal then goodness knows what that could throw up.

Upgrading Magento from 1.6 to 1.9 is usually a far more problematic task than your experience. Good effort. Glad you got it sorted 🙂

Geoff
